Ophthalmoplegia (Eye Muscle Weakness)

Description
Ophthalmoplegia is a symptom and is a weakness of the muscles of the eyes. Double vision is a common complaint. Causes include: myasthenia gravis, supranuclear palsy, Wernicke's encephalopathy, stroke, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, and cavernous venous thrombosis.

Symptoms
Double vision, inability to move eyes normally.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A CT scan and/or MRI will be done to identify the cause of the disorder. Tests to rule out other causes may be performed.

- CBC
- Chem 12
- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause of the disorder.
