Nasal Cancer (Tumor)

Description
Cancer involving the nose and inside the nose. Cancer is an overgrowth of cells and can be benign, meaning slow growing, or malignant. Malignant cancers are the most serious. They grow rapidly, can destroy surrounding normal tissue, and spread to other areas of the body (metastasize). There are many different types of nasal cancer but almost all are malignant. This disease is rare and is more common in men with most being older than 45. Initially there are few symptoms but with time signs of a nasal infection may develop. Unfortunately many of these cancers are not found until the tumor is advanced making treatment difficult.

Symptoms
Nasal discharge, nose bleeds, nasal pain, sinus pain, recurrent sinus infections.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A CT and/or MRI scan are done to define the extent of the disease. A biopsy is done to determine the cell type.
- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
Treatment can be very difficult but includes: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or surgery. For more information contact the American Cancer Society: (800)227-2345.
