Tests
A history and physical will be done. A muscle biopsy or EMG (electromyograph) may be done to determine the cause as well as blood tests.
Treatment
Treatment is dependent on the disease causing the disorder. For more information on myotonic dystrophy see http://www.myotonic.org/, and for more information on myotonia congenita see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001424.htm.
