Description

A condition in which there is chronic inflammation of the muscles. Autoimmune disease are frequent causes with polymyositis and dermatomyositis the most common. In addition to autoimmune diseases HIV and other viruses, bacteria (including mycobacteria), fungi, and parasites can cause myositis.

Muscle pain, muscle tenderness, swelling, weakness, stiffness.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Blood tests will be done to determine the cause and rule out other causes. A muscle biopsy can establish the diagnosis. Specific blood tests for autoimmune diseases will be done.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the muscle inflammation but may include: steroids, immunosupressive medications, and/or antibiotics.
