Mycoplasma Genitalium

Description
Caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma genitalium and is the third most common sexually transmitted disease. Some patients may not initially have any symptoms. In women as the infection progresses from the cervix to the uterus and fallopian tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease) sterility can occur.

Symptoms
Asymptomatic early in the infection and in men. Later: lower abdominal pain, painful intercourse, fever, vomiting, infertility.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Urethral cultures and/or cervical cultures are done to identify the disease.
Treatment
The bacteria can exhibit resistance to treatment, commonly used antibiotics include doxycycline and quinolones.
