Motion Sickness

Description
A disorder characterized by an unpleasant, temporary disturbance that occurs while traveling. Patients experience dizziness, nausea or vomiting. The symptoms become worse with any head movement, and lessen when the eyes are closed.

Symptoms
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, unsteady gait, room spinning (vertigo).

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
There are three types of medications used to treat motion sickness. 1) Scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop) or pills (Scopace). 2) Anti-emetics including promethazine hydrochloride (Anergan, Phenergan) and ondansetron (Zofran). 3) Antihistamines including dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), diphenhydramine (Benadryl), and meclizine (Antivert).
