Molar Pregnancy (Gestational Trophoblastic Dz)

Description
Results from an abnormal growth of cells that are supposed to develop into the placenta. A mass develops in the uterus instead of a fetus. The exact cause is unknown but may include: defects in the egg, problems within the uterus, or nutritional deficiencies. Women under 20 or over 40 years of age have a higher risk. A molar pregnancy is also called gestational trophoblastic disease or hydatidiform mole.

Symptoms
Abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, excessive vomiting, a uterus larger or smaller than the expected gestational age, rapid heart rate, restlessness, nervousness, heat intolerance, unexplained weight loss, loose stools, trembling hands, high blood pressure, swollen feet, protein in the urine.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A pelvic ultrasound will be done to rule out an intrauterine pregnancy. Other studies may include a CT scan.

- BHCG
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Treatment includes a dilation and curettage. A hysterectomy may be done for patients not wishing to ever become pregnant.
