Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain)
Description
Abdominal pain that occurs at the time of ovulation. The pain results from irritation of the abdominal cavity secondary to bleeding from the ovulation site. About 20% of women experience Mittelschmerz and the presence of the symptoms does not signify any structural disease.
Symptoms
Lower-abdominal pain usually located on one side, recurrent pain that recurs during the same time in the menstrual cycle, the pain may switch sides from month to month.
Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An ultrasound may be done to rule out other causes of the pain.
- CBC
- BHCG
- Ultrasound
Treatment
No treatment is usually necessary. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn) and/or pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), may be needed for prolonged or intense pain.
