Description

A tumor that arises from a distant site. Metastatic cancers normally spread by traveling through the blood stream, by using the lymph channels, or by spreading within the abdominal cavity. The cancerous cells grow and can destroy surrounding tissue. The original cancer is called the primary tumor and the sites of metastasis are named secondary tumors.

Depends on the site of the metastasis.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: CT or MRI scan to identify the metastasis, a Positron Emission Tomagraphy (PET) scan can also be done and is more accurate in detecting small metastases.

Treatment

Treatment

Depends on the cell type of the metastasis and the location of the metastasis but may include: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or surgery.
