A stage of a woman's life where the ovaries do not produce enough estrogen to maintain normal menstrual cycles. It often begins with irregular menstrual cycles. It occurs most commonly between 40 and 55 years of age. Declining levels of estrogen cause many of the symptoms.

Symptoms

Decreased sex drive, hot flashes, skin flushing, insomnia, irregular menstrual periods, mood swings including irritability, depression, anxiety, night sweats, spotting of blood in between periods, vaginal dryness and painful sexual intercourse. The long-term effects of menopause include: bone loss, osteoporosis, changes in cholesterol levels, and greater risk of heart disease.

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Hormone tests are done to establish the diagnosis.

Treatment

Menopause is a natural process. Treatment with hormones may be helpful for debilitating symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness.
