Mediastinitis (Inner Chest Inflammation)

Description
Inflammation in the mediastinum usually from an infection. The mediastinum is the area in the center of the chest between the lungs and contains the heart, aorta, vena cava, windpipe (trachea), esophagus, and thymus gland. Common causes are chest surgery, cancer, or a ruptured esophagus from vomiting or an endoscopy. The disorder is frequently life threatening unless treated early.

Symptoms
Fever, chills, chest pain, shortness of breath, malaise.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A CT scan or MRI can identify the inflammation. Blood tests will be done to define the extent of infection and cultures will be taken to identify the organism.

- X-Ray
- EKG
- CT Scan
Treatment
Treatment includes intravenous antibiotics, and surgery. Surgery is done to drain any infection, remove infected tissue, or repair any esophageal injuries.
