Fiber is the part of fruits, vegetables and grains (roughage) not broken down by the body that contributes to stool. A low fiber diet may prescribed by an MD after certain surgeries. Habitual low fiber diets can lead to constipation. Low fiber diets may also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and colon cancer.

A history and physical exam will be performed.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment includes increasing the "roughage" in the diet. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of fiber. Oral supplements can also be taken.
