Ligament Tear

Description
Tear of the ligament. Ligaments hold the joint together. Trauma or over use can cause injury to these fibrous structures producing a tear. Some tears go away with only immobilization, while others will require surgery. An MRI is needed to fully identify the extent of injury, although arthroscopic surgery can also provide direct visualization of the injury.

Symptoms
Pain, swelling, mild redness, bruising, tenderness, decreased motion, joint laxity.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An MRI can identify the tear and the extent of damage.
- X-Ray
Treatment
Treatment includes: immobilization, ice, elevation and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), and/or pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Physical therapy and therapeutic ultrasound can quicken healing. Immobilization and/or surgery is usually needed.
