Ligament Sprain

Description
Ligaments hold the joint together. Trauma or over use can cause injury to these fibrous structures producing a sprain. Most sprains go away on their own without any specific therapy except rest. The ligament can cause swelling to the affected area. Severe sprains may require immobilization or surgery.

Symptoms
Pain, swelling, mild redness, bruising, tenderness, decreased motion.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An MRI can identify the tear and the extent of damage.
- X-Ray
- MRI
Treatment
Treatment includes: immobilization, ice, elevation and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn)and pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Physical therapy and therapeutic ultrasound can quicken healing. Rarely immobilization and/or surgery is required.
