Leg Swelling

Description
Leg swelling can result from inflammation, infection, allergic reaction, a blood clot (deep vein throbosis) or cancer. Inflammation can be caused by trauma, arthritis, or an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. A back up of fluid from poor circulation can also cause leg swelling (pedal edema).

Symptoms
Pain, swelling, pus, redness.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Depending on the history an X-ray may be done.

Treatment
Depends on the cause of the swelling but may include: immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), other anti-inflammatory medications, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and/or antibiotics.
