Insomnia (Difficulty Sleeping)

Description
Inability to sleep normally and has many causes including but not limited to: depression, thyroid disease, sleep apnea, lung disease, congestive heart failure, pain disorders, and anxiety. The overuse of stimulants, erratic work hours, and the overuse of alcohol are also frequent causes.

Symptoms
Difficulty falling asleep, feeling tired, waking up several times during sleep.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Polysomnography, an overnight sleep study, can help rule out other types of sleep disorders (such as sleep apnea).
Treatment
Avoid stimulants before bed, and don't take daytime naps. Changing bedtime behavior can help resolve some insomnia such as: going to bed the same time each night, keeping a comfortable and quiet sleeping environment, getting out of bed if not able to sleep after 10 minutes, using the bed only for sleep and sex, practicing evening relaxation routines such as muscle relaxation or meditation. At times sleeping medications are needed for relief.
