Impingement Syndrome Of Shoulder

Description
Shoulder pain resulting from pressure on the rotator cuff from part of the shoulder blade (scapula) as the arm is lifted. The rotator cuff is a tendon linking four muscles of the shoulder. These muscles cover the head of the humerus and make up the shoulder joint. The muscles work together to lift and rotate the shoulder.

Symptoms
Shoulder pain, pain with reaching and lifting, swelling, tenderness.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests to determine other causes of the symptoms will be done.

- MRI
Treatment
Treatment includes: rest, stretching exercises, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), and pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Surgery may be necessary.
