Hyperkalemia (Elevated Potassium)

Description
A condition caused by an abnormally high concentration of potassium in the blood. Potassium is a very important electrolyte in the body and high levels can cause the heart and muscles to function improperly and result in death. Common causes are kidney failure and medications.

Symptoms
Weakness, slow heart rate, fainting, breathing problems.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Measurement of the potassium level and kidney function will also be done.

- Chem 12
- EKG
Treatment
Therapy includes reversing the cause of the elevated potassium. The treatment depends on the level of the potassium but may include: kayexalate, insulin and glucose, sodium bicarbonate, and/or calcium. Dialysis is needed for serious elevations or if associated with kidney failure.
