Hordeolum (Sty Of Eye)

Description
Caused by a blocked gland that become inflamed and infected by bacteria. The styes can develop on the eyelid margins (external hordeolum) or under the eyelid (internal hordeolum). Chronic styes can become chalazions.

Symptoms
Swelling of the eyelid, redness of the eyelid, a bump or pimple on the eyelid.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
Treatment includes warm compresses and topical antibiotics. Rarely incision and drainage is required.
