Gilbert's Disease

Description
An elevated bilirubin level in the blood that is caused by an abnormal metabolism of bilirubin by the liver. Bilirubin is a breakdown product of red blood cells. The disorder is inherited and one in five Caucasians has the disease. The disorder causes a yellow coloring of the skin but is otherwise not dangerous and very few other symptoms are experienced.

Symptoms
Yellow skin, yellow coloring to the white part of the eyes (sclera), fatigue, abdominal pain.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be done. An elevated indirect bilirubin level in the blood confirms the diagnosis.

Treatment
No treatment is necessary.
