Description

An infection of the intestinal tract that results from the parasite, Giardia lamblia. This parasite is found in contaminated water. It is becoming increasingly common among day care and preschool children. It also occurs when hikers drink from polluted streams.

Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloating.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Other tests include stool studies to identify the parasite.

  • CBC
  • Chem 12
Treatment

Treatment

Treatment includes antiparasitic medications, fluids, and rest. Intravenous fluids are required for significant dehydration.
