Functional Disorders (Psychogenic Illness)

Description
Disorder characterized by physical symptoms with no known or detectable organic basis. It is a condition thought to be psychogenic in nature such as: chronic abdominal pain, low back pain, chronic fatigue, chronic chest pain, and chronic headaches.

Symptoms
Symptoms can be diverse depending on the body system affected.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A psychiatric evaluation will be performed. An extensive work-up may be done to rule out other causes for the symptoms.

Treatment
Treatment depends on the symptoms but may include: psychological treatment, counseling, and at times chronic pain treatment with a chronic pain specialist.
