A fracture is a break in a bone. Fractures can be simple or complex in multiple pieces (comminuted). The fracture can bleed into the surrounding tissue resulting in bruising and in severe cases a limb threatening condition, compartment syndrome. The fracture can also injure adjacent nerves, tendons or blood vessels.

Pain, swelling, deformity, numbness.

A history and physical exam will be performed. If an fracture is strongly suspected and not seen on X-ray, a CT scan may be done.

If the broken bones are not properly aligned, a reduction to restore the normal positioning will be performed. A splint or cast is then applied. Medications for pain including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)will be prescribed.
