Parasitic worms that affect over 100 million people worldwide. The disease is found in the tropics and sub-tropics of Asia, Africa, the Western Pacific, and parts of the Caribbean and South America.These parasites are transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito and develop into adult worms in the lymphatic vessels, causing severe damage and swelling (lymphoedema).

Painful swollen legs or scrotum, fever, headache.

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Antibodies to the parasite can be measured in the blood.

Treatment

Treatment

Antiparasitic medications are given. Chronic infections and lymph damage can occur occasionally requiring surgery.
