Description

Describes the range of alcohol effects on an unborn child. The problems may be mild to severe. Alcohol can cause the unborn child to have permanent physical or mental problems.

Distinctive facial changes, mental retardation, cognitive disorders, attention deficits, poor memory.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Other tests to establish the diagnosis will be done.

Treatment

Treatment

There is no cure for fetal alcohol syndrome, because the central nervous system (CNS) damage creates a permanent disability, but treatment is possible. Therapy depends on the extent of this damage and the symptoms experienced, but may include: special education programs and family counseling.
