Femoral (Leg) Artery Aneurysm (Dilation)

Description
An aneurysm of the femoral artery which is located in the groin. Patients rarely have any symptoms due to femoral artery aneurysm, they are usually discovered on routine physical examination by a physician. The cause of femoral artery aneurysms is unknown. They tend to occur in older men and women (more common in men) and femoral artery aneurysms are frequently bilateral.

Symptoms
Palpable bulge or mass, pain in the affected area, pulsatile.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Other tests include: Imaging studies to diagnose the disorder.
Standard Workup
- CBC
- Chem 12
- UA
- EKG
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Treatment includes vascular surgery to repair the aneurysm, or more rarely a stent to bypass the defect.

Long-term results of venous bypass for lower extremity arteries with selective short segment prosthetic reinforcement of varicose dilatations.
