Fecal Impaction (Rectal Blockage From Stool)

Description
Severe constipation with a large amount of fecal material stuck in the rectum. This disorder is usually not serious, but may complicate other illnesses. It can be caused by narcotic use, low fiber diets, and a sedentary lifestyle. Fecal impactions are usually very painful.

Symptoms
Rectal pain, inability to pass a stool, constipation, passing of small amounts of liquid stool.

Tests
A history and physical including a rectal exam will be performed. The diagnosis is confirmed by doing a digital rectal exam. Occasionally imaging studies are done.
Standard Workup
- X-Ray
Treatment
Treatment includes: laxatives, enemas, and/or manual disimpaction.

Research
Risk factors associated with stool retention assessed by abdominal radiography for constipation.
