Ethanol (Alcohol)

Description
Ethanol is a psychoactive drug, best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. It is often referred to simply as alcohol, and is a central nervous system depressant. Alcoholic beverages can be classified into fermented beverages (beverages made by the action of yeast on sugary foodstuffs) or as distilled beverages (beverages whose preparation involves concentrating the ethanol in fermented beverages by distillation). The use of alcohol is related to significant sociologic and medical negative consequences, and can be highly addictive.

Symptoms
Drunkenness, disorientation, drowsiness, lack of coordination, slurred speech, stupor, dizziness. Severe ingestions can cause hypothermia.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An alcohol level can be measured using a breathalyzer or a blood test.
Treatment
Therapy depends on the symptoms involved. Most ethanol intoxications resolve on their own without any specific treatment. Severe ingestions can result in cardiopulmonary collapse and require aggressive support of the breathing and circulation. There is no antidote to immediate reverse the effects of alcohol. Consider calling the National Poison Control Phone Number for further information or assistance: 1-800-222-1222.
