Esophageal Stricture

Description
A stricture causes a narrowing of the esophagus resulting in difficulty swallowing. The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. The stricture can be caused by gasroesophageal reflux, previous endoscopy, trauma, infections, or corrosive ingestions.

Symptoms
Painful swallowing, vomiting, chest pain with swallowing, inability to swallow food.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), or esophagram.
Treatment
Esophageal dilation is performed during an endoscopy. A proton pump inhibitor may be prescribed. Surgical treatment is rarely necessary.
