Esophageal Cyst

Description
An esophageal cyst is a duplication of the esophagus usually involving the distal third of the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. The cysts can compress surrounding structures causing difficulties swallowing, problems breathing, or heart arrhythmias. This disorder is rare and many patients do not have any symptoms.

Symptoms
Chest pain, swallowing problems, breathing problems, vomiting blood.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A chest CT scan and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with a biopsy are the usual work-up.

Treatment
Surgical removal is the only treatment.
