Esophageal Cancer (Tumor)

Description
Cancer of the esophagus usually begins in the lower third, and occurs predominantly in adults over the age of 50. The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Esophageal cancer spreads very easily. It is more common in smokers, alcohol drinkers and those with Barrett's esophagitis.

Symptoms
Chest pain, vomiting, weight loss, vomiting blood, vomiting coffee ground material, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, black stools (melena).

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and biopsy, a chest CT scan or MRI is done to determine the extent of the disease.
- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
If the cancer only involves the esophagus surgery may be the only treatment needed. For more advanced cases chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is also performed. If the cancer is far advanced only palliative treatment is given. American Cancer Society: (800)227-2345
