Endometritis (Uterus Inflammation)

Description
Refers to inflammation of the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. Infection is the usual cause of the inflammation and these organisms are the most common offenders: Chlamydia, gonococcus, and tuberculosis. The disorder is associated with childbirth, abortion, surgery or IUD use.

Symptoms
Lower abdominal pain, fever, vaginal discharge, fatigue, abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Cultures of the cervix for gonorrhea and Chlamydia will be done. Endometrial biopsy and/or pelvic laparoscopy may be needed.
Treatment
Oral or intravenous antibiotics are administered. If appropriate, treatment of the sexual partner is required to prevent recurrence.
