Endometriosis (Uterine Tissue Outside Uterus)

Description

Characterized by the appearance of tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) outside the uterine cavity. This tissue may be found on the surface of the ovary, behind the uterus, in the abdominal cavity, on the intestinal wall and even at sites further away. The disorder causes pain and can result in infertility.

Symptoms

Symptoms

Painful periods, painful intercourse, pain with bowel movements, pelvic pain, premenstrual spotting, problems getting pregnant (infertility).

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic laparoscopy are done to establish the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment

Pain medications are used. Hormonal therapy to stop menstruation is sometimes helpful. In severe cases surgery is performed including hysterectomy. For more information contact: Endometriosis Association: (800)992-3636
