Description

Swelling of the ear can arise from trauma (hematoma), inflammation, allergic reaction, or infection. Ear swelling from trauma can result in permanent disfigurement called a cauliflower ear if the disorder is not treated appropriately.

Ear pain, ear swelling, redness, increased warmth, fever.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Lab tests may be done to rule out infection or inflammation. A CT scan or MRI may be performed to determine the underlying cause of the swelling as well.

  • Chem 12
  • CT Scan
  • MRI
Treatment

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause but may include: nothing, cold compress, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), pain medications, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or antibiotics.
