Dislocation (Joint Out Of Place)

Description

Description

An injury to the joint in which the ends of your bones are forced from their normal positions. The injury temporarily deforms and immobilizes the joint and may result in sudden and severe pain. Associated nerve or vascular injury can occur. Many times ligaments are torn that support the joint during the injury.

Pain, deformity, numbness, weakness, cool skin.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: X-ray and a CT scan.

Treatment

Treatment

The joint will need to be put back into its normal position, followed by a period of immobilization. Pain medications and/or sedation are frequently administered prior to the procedure. After the the joint is put back in place the provider will check the nerves and blood vessels to ensure they were not damaged during the procedure.
