Discitis (Back Inflammation)

Description
Conditions in which the intervertebral disc is infected or inflamed. The intervetebral discs are the cushioning and ligaments between the bones of the back. Discitis can develop through bacteria in the blood being delivered to the disc space, or from inflammation caused by an autoimmune disorder. Infections can also spread from adjacent infections and occasionally from diagnostic testing or surgery.

Symptoms
Fever, back pain, back stiffness, weakness.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed, X-rays, CT scan and/or MRI will be done. MRI is the most accurate method of detection. White blood cell count and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) will be measured and followed.
- CBC
- X-Ray
- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
Antibiotics especially those to cover staphylococcal infections are given. If the disease is due to an autoimmune disorder then anti-inflammatory medications will be given.
