Dental Eruptions

Description
The appearance of the primary teeth in infants. The appearance of wisdom teeth in preteens and teens. Pericoronitis is infection and swelling of the gums around the teeth, usually the wisdom teeth.

Symptoms
Crying, low grade fever, drooling, painful gums, swelling of the gums.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
No treatment is needed for simple teeth eruption. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn) are administered. Pericoronitis is treated with good dental hygiene. If the infection is severe antibiotics may be prescribed, and at times the affected wisdom tooth extracted.
