Contact Urticaria (Hives)

Description
A skin condition, commonly caused by an allergic reaction, that is characterized by raised red skin wheals (welts). Urticaria results from cold, allergies, or stress.

Symptoms
Redness, itching, raised skin rash, a rash that appears and disappears.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed for detection of the irritant. Allergy testing and/or skin biopsy for severe or ambiguous cases may be necessary.
Treatment
Treatment includes: removing the irritant, avoiding the irritant, and cleansing the skin. Antihistamines and epinephrine are also used.
