Description

Inflammation of the colon from infection, low blood flow (ischemia), or inflammation (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis).

Symptoms

Symptoms

Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, blood in stools, fever.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Stool studies will be done to identify bacteria, parasites or clostridium dificile toxin. A colon biopsy may be done to rule out inflammatory bowel disease or ischemic colitis.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the colitis but may include: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or steroids. If severe, surgical resection may be necessary.
