Chemical Irritants

Description
Chemical irritants cause pain and swelling of skin and mucous membranes. The mechanism is direct damage to the cells resulting in inflammation and swelling.

Symptoms
Pain, swelling, redness, itching.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
Treatment includes: removal of the irritant, cleansing of the affected area, and occasionally topical steroids.
