Bronchitis (Bronchial Tube Infection)

Description
Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchi. The bronchi are the tubes that carry air through the lungs. The inflammation is caused by chronic irritation (Chronic bronchitis) or from infection with a bacteria or virus. Smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis.

Symptoms
Cough, sputum production (usually colored), blood tinged sputum, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, fever.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A chest X-ray may be done to rule out pneumonia or lung collapse (pneumothorax). Rarely a culture is done to identify the bacteria.

Treatment
Oxygen, bronchodilators (albuterol, ipratropium), antibiotics, and/or steroids are used depending on the severity and cause.
