Bronchiolitis (Bronchial Tube Inflammation)

Description
An inflammation of the small passages in the lungs (bronchioles), usually caused by a viral infection. The most common viruses are respiratory synctial virus (RSV), adenovirus, influenza, and parainfluenza. The disease usually affects children under the age of 2, with a peak age of 3 to 6 months.

Symptoms
Cough, wheezing, breathing problems, bluish discoloration of skin, fever.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A chest X-ray and CT scan will be performed. Sputum analysis is done to rule out bacterial, fungal or tuberculosis (TB) infection.

Treatment
