
An avulsion fracture occurs when a ligament or tendon attached to a bone pulls away a piece (fragment) of the bone. It can also be associated with serious injury to the ligament or tendon involved.

Pain, swelling, decreased motion.

A history and physical exam will be performed. X-rays and other radiologic imaging will be taken when appropriate.

Immobilization with a splint or cast. Depending on the location surgical repair may be necessary.
