Autoimmune Conditions

Description
Any disease that results from an over active immune response is termed an autoimmune disease. Prominent examples include Celiac disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 (IDDM), systemic lupus erythematosus , Sjögren's syndrome, Churg-Strauss Syndrome, multiple sclerosis (MS), Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Many different organs can be damaged depending on the specific disease.

Symptoms
Fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, chest pain, headache, rash, weakness, numbness.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Serologic tests, radiologic imaging and occasionally biopsies are needed to characterize the specific disorder.

- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
Depends on the specific condition. Medications including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil,naproxen/Naprosyn), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and other more potent anti-inflammatory medications such as: methotrexate, etanercept (Enbrel), infiximab (Remicaid), and adalimumab (Humira) are used.
