Atypical Pneumonia (Lung Infection)

Description

Pneumonia caused by certain bacteria -- namely, Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and Chlamydia pneumonia. These pneumonias are usually mild and sometimes called walking pneumonia. Despite this name these infections can be fatal especially when caused by Legionella.

Cough, fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, rash, diarrhea.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. A chest X-ray will be taken to diagnose the pneumonia. When appropriate a sputum culture is obtained to isolate the exact organism.

Treatment

Treatment

Antibiotics are necessary for treatment and the following have activity against the offending organisms: erythromycin, azithromycin (Z-Pac), clarithromycin (Biaxin), fluoroquinolones and their derivatives (such as levofloxacin), and tetracyclines (such as doxycycline).
