Aseptic Joint Effusion (Fluid In Joint)

Description
Abnormal joint fluid accumulation that mimics septic arthritis but is not caused by a bacterial infectious process. The exact cause is not always determined but possible causes include viral infections and arthritic disorders.

Symptoms
Joint pain, joint swelling, redness, increased warmth, decreased motion.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A needle aspiration of joint fluid (Arthrocentesis) and analysis will be done to rule out infection or other causes of arthritis.
Treatment
Treatment consists of observation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or joint immobilization.
