Arm Swelling

Description
Arm swelling can result from inflammation, infection, a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) or cancer. Inflammation can be caused by trauma, arthritis, or an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. A back up of fluid from poor circulation and blocked lymph channels can also cause arm swelling.

Symptoms
Pain, swelling, redness, increased warmth, decreased movement.

Tests
A history and physical will be performed. Blood tests and X-rays will be done to identify the cause of the swelling. A NIVA (non-invasive vascular assessment) may be done to rule out a blood clot (DVT). If there is fluid in the joint a needle may be inserted into the joint for analysis (arthrocentesis).
- CBC
- X-Ray
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Depends on the cause of the swelling but may include elevation, blood thinners, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn),acetaminophen(Tylenol), immobilization, or antibiotics.
