Aphthous Ulcers (Oral Ulcers)

Description
Also called canker sores these are small, shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues in the mouth. They are most commonly found under the tongue, inside the cheeks or lips, and at the base of the gums. Unlike cold sores, canker sores don't occur on the surface of your lips and are not contagious.

Symptoms
Small painful mouth ulcers, The ulcers are usually covered by a gray membrane and their borders are surrounded by a halo. Tingling and burning precede the ulcers.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
Treatment consists of salt water rinses, and gargling with 50% peroxide 50% water. For more severe cases, fluocinonide gel (Lidex) or chlorhexidine gluconate (Periden) mouthwash may be prescribed.
