Description

An eating disorder in which people have an intense fear of gaining weight and can become dangerously thin. Signs of anorexia include less than normal weight, negative body image, and obsession with food. Also known as anorexia nervosa. This disorder is more common in females in their teenage years.

Symptoms

Symptoms

Unreasonable fear of obesity, greater than 15% loss of weight, depression, loss of appetite, constipation, excessive exercise, loss of menstrual cycle, severe malnutrition and death.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. Lab tests will be done to rule out consequences of malnutrition.

  • BHCG
  • UA
Treatment

Treatment

Therapy is aimed at reversing the immediate damage and reversing the cause of the disorder. Treatment includes: intravenous feeding, intravenous fluids, psychological counseling, and antidepressants.
