Anaphylactoid Reactions (Allergic Like)

Description

Not a true allergic reaction. Anaphylactoid reactions are caused by the release of histamine and can result in a spectrum of symptoms from a rash to life threatening anaphylaxis. Intravenous contrast dye and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are two common causes.

Symptoms

Rash, itching, throat swelling, facial swelling, breathing problems, wheezing, low blood pressure, fainting, death.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed to determine the offending agent.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment includes: antihistamines (diphenhydramine/Benadryl), histamine 2 blockers (cimetidine/Tagamet, ranitidine/Zantac), steroids, epinephrine, and intravenous fluids.
